Excerpt of Conscience

The ghosts of forgotten actions,
Came floating before my sight,
And things that I thought were dead things
Were alive with terrible might

And the vision of all my past life
Was an awful thing to face,
Alone with my conscience sitting
In that solemnly silent place.

And so I have learned a lesson
Which I ought to have known before,
And which, though I learned it dreaming,
I hope to forget no more.

So I sit alone with my conscience
In the place where the years increase,
And I try to remember the future
In the land where time will cease.

Groundhog Week ! (i.e. another 6 weeks of winter?)

Exhausted demostrator in stroller stops by the Cafe

(picture above) An exhausted young demonstrator at the Peace rally that took place outside the Chatham County Courthouse last Saturday afternoon, finds solace and warmth at the General Store Cafe.

Despite the frigidly cold weather, the 100 or so demonstrators marched around the courthouse displaying their opposition to a potential war against Iraq. The demonstrators held such signs as "No blood for oil," "No first strike," and "What would MLK do?" Peace marches have been widespread throughout the US and the rest of the world, in response to Washington's messages that war with Iraq might be imminent.

In last several weeks, President Bush has shipped out increasing numbers of military personnel to bases surrounding Iraq. On January 27th, the United Nations weapon inspectors submitted their first report on the status of the ongoing inspections.

MUSIC THIS WEEK!

Thursday, January 30th - Blue Combo (Jazz)

You'll hear Blue Combo play jazz standards, for sure, but don't be surprised if you hear tunes from the songbooks of Pat Metheny, Patsy Cline, Charlie Haden, or even the BeeGees. If Bernie is feeling particularly feisty, you may even hear a Wes Montgomery tune segue into a blazing Jimi Hendrix number. This incredibly talented trio includes:

Bernie Petteway - guitar. Bernie shares his many guitar playing talents with musicians and groups as diverse as the North Carolina Symphony, the contra dance group Contrazz, numerous national and local theater productions, and the eclectic acoustic stringband Stringfellows. Bernie was also one of the founding members of the legendary jazz-fusion group 3PM which EER-MUSIC.com's tribute page calls "one of the most unknown and underrated jazz rock fusion bands to have ever existed".

Ed Butler - drums. Ed is a multi-talented drummer and percussionist who has played with the likes of the Red Clay Ramblers, Michelle Shocked, Stringfellows (where he not only plays percussion, but guitar, and mandolin) and with guitarist Rich Robeson and their group Thelonious Society/OOTO. Ed also composes for Jelly Theater, Playmaker's Theater and has played for numerous national and local theater productions. This year Ed joins Bernie in the orchestra pit for David Ira Wood's production of "A Christmas Carol".

Rick Lassiter - double bass. Rick provides the low frequencies for many local musicians. He used to almost be a regular at the General Store where he consumed his weight in vegetable plates and appeared with Mahlon Hoard, Tyson Rogers, Scott Warner, and Glenn Morisette. Rick was the original bassist for the pop group Ida and is presently working with the artist Jolei (aka Joyce Bowden) on the production of her new recording. Rick has a solo record that was released at the begining of this year entitled "Songs for the Unconsoled". This CD features Bernie on dobro and acoustic and electric guitar and also features Ed playing drums.

Friday, January 31 - Guilty Pleasures (blues, country, bluegrass, old-time)

The Guilty Pleasures is a group from Chapel Hill whose members have played together and with other local groups and for the past 20 years. Using various combinations of instruments such as guitar, mandolin, fiddle, accordion, harmonica, trumpet, and percussion, they play traditional music that encompasses several genres.

Old time, bluegrass, country, blues, jazz&.maybe even a Beatle song or two. The music is fun and family friendly! They have played at the GSC several times and it is always a fun evening!
