Friday, April 4 - North Carolina Songwriters - (Folk and Rock) Featuring Greg Taylor, Piper Kessler, Mary Rocap, Susan Kirk, Mary Elizabeth Johnson Greg Taylor describes his music as a "combination of all that I have heard and played and experienced. My songs are an expression of all of that and more?from feelings I have, to stories I hear, to observations of the world around me, to my own take on my own bizarre ideas." Greg Taylor?s songs are like "introspection on a freight train", with momentous music that moves you through thoughtful, self-exploring lyrics. Mary Rocap's love of traditional music has always been at the heart of her repertoire. The making of music took many forms including R & B bands and "Elvis" back up vocals as well as acoustic duos, trios, and quartet groups. She never aspired to be a songwriter, but upon reaching her forties came to the realization that there were songs within her that were longing for expression. At that point she began moving away from being a back-up vocalist to taking a lead role when making music. She now performs as a solo artist and in Silver, a folk trio with percussion. Many of Mary?s songs find inspiration from two main sources. One source is the natural world and our place within it; the sea and stars are prominent features of her landscape. The other is her attempt to walk in faith, acknowledging that doubt is never far behind. She sings of the beleaguered hopeful. Her voice is often described as soul-full and rich, her delivery penetrating. She was a recent recipient of the NC Art?s Council?s Artist Fellowship for Songwriting. Susan Kirk was born singing. Her music is best described as "rootsy with a splash of pop". Saturday, April 5 - Open Irish Session (Irish Folk) Its that time of month again when you can come down to the store and enjoy both the penny-whistle and a good ol' pint (or even join the ruccus crowd on stage) |
