"I have never heard the darbuka and the djembe synergized so well". -Music Explorium
Upon returning from a six month musical exploration of the Nile River Valley and the Sinai mountains, the vision to bring Middle Eastern / Arabic melodies and rhythms interpreted through the voice of American jazz became increasingly compelling. The original components of the group began with two violins, an acoustic bass, and two percussionists. As the magical potency of the music grew, the group soon morphed into its present incarnation. A revolving door of extremely talented musicians, with a willingness to push themselves and their audience to unforeseen places, fused traditional Arabic music, classical Indian concepts of composition, North African rhythmic grooves, and pure American "old-school Funk" to produce the unique soundscape that is Jaafar.
The Bass player, producer, and leader, Troy Cole, has performed with the popular funk-jazz band P.L.D., opening up for such acts as Charlie Hunter, and Derek Trucks . "I try to incorporate the Middle Eastern techniques of melodic improvisation with the Jazz styles of John Coltrane, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Jonas Hellborg, Shakti, http://www.jaafarmusic.com/jaafarpg2pt2.htm etc."
The percussion players' global influences vary from West African to Turkish to Indian to the incorporation of a full Western-style drum kit. Mike Lyons, performs on the flugelhorn, accompanied by Pat Madison on acoustic guitar, and Brad Newal on guitar and violin.
We have performed as a septet, as solo bass, and every possibility in between
The music of JAAFAR is about comparison; the "difference" and the "same as".
Alyson ? I guess you will have to take what you want from this stuff ? I actually got this off their website at jaafarmusic.com in case you just want to go there and get some yourself. We are VERY EXCITED about this group!!

Saturday, August 9 - Kickin Grass (Carolina Style Bluegrass)
Mama's Recipe for Kickin Grass: Find 5 Happy-go Lucky, good lookin', down home pickers with angelic voices to boot, 5 hot-lick instruments (preferably banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitar and upright bass), 4 part melt-your-heart harmonies. Combine: 1/3 traditional bluegrass tunes, 1/3 rockin' classics (bluegrass style) and 1/3 can't get 'em out of yer head" originals. Place on pre-heated stage for 1-7 hours and listen to your hearts content!
The band brings together five talented musicians: Matt Hooper on fiddle, Jamie Dawson on mandolin, Kyra Moore on banjo, Patrick Walsh on upright bass, and Lynda Wittig on guitar.
Hailing from the Triangle area of North Carolina, Kickin Grass is a strongly traditional-based contemporary bluegrass band with tight vocal harmony and driving instrumentation. The band formed in 2000 to provide musical accompaniment for the Apple Chill Cloggers. In 2002 the current lineup started performing locally, regionally and internationally, incorporating standard bluegrass tunes, non-traditional rock & country classics and a number of ?can?t get ?em out of yer head? originals into their entertaining sets. In 2003, Kickin Grass beat the odds and won the Best Band in Raleigh competition hosted by the Guitar Center and the Hibernian Pub. The band brings together five talented musicians: Matt Hooper on fiddle, Jamie Dawson on mandolin, Kyra Moore on banjo, Patrick Walsh on upright bass, and Lynda Wittig on guitar.
Matt Hooper ? Matt started playing classical violin long before he called it the fiddle. Hailing from Harnett County, North Carolina, he currently plays with a number of groups, including the country band, Dakota Rain. His classical training, country background and musical ear add depth and pizzazz to the sound of Kickin Grass.
Jamie Dawson - A Harnett County native, Jamie comes from a deep-seeded bluegrass tradition. His father, bass player for Bluegrass 78, gave Jamie his first mandolin at age 8, and he's been playing ever since. Jamie also plays bass with Raleigh-based alt country band Brother's Grim. His low-end vocals and high-energy mandolin drive both the traditional and contemporary sounds of Kickin Grass.
Kyra Moore - Originally from Boulder, Colorado, Kyra comes from a long line of musicians. She picked up the banjo at age 14, and brought her talents with her to UNC-Chapel Hill, where she is currently a junior studying mathematics. Her melodic banjo style and soulful harmonies give momentum to the Kickin Grass band.
Patrick Walsh - Patrick began his musical career by studying the piano. He was the lead vocalist and keyboard player in the country cover band Summer Wind before taking up the bass and singing bluegrass. Patrick?s hard-driving bass playing is the foundation of the music provided for the Apple Chill Cloggers. He is also an award winning vocalist, singing baritone and tenor harmonies for the Kickin Grass band.
Lynda Wittig ? Lynda has been singing since the age of 5, picked up the guitar during her college years and has been writing songs ever since. She?s been a member of numerous performing groups, including the Kydells, a Raleigh-based country roadhouse band, Innocent Lisa, an original acoustic duo, and the North Carolina Master Chorale. Lynda?s powerful vocals, strong rhythm guitar and skillful songwriting bring new dimensions to Kickin Grass.
